General Meteorology

Lecture content:

In Meteorology we study physics of the atmosphere in terms of its weather and dynamics. The lecture will focus on the lower atmosphere (troposphere), where most of the processes determining the weather take place. Phenomena ranging from small to global spatial scale will be discussed.

Major topics are typical flow patterns of the atmosphere, static (in-)stability of the atmosphere, circulation systems, and mid-latitude cyclones. The features are explained by presenting a phenomenological description as well as the basic physical mechanisms of the processes.

It is expected that participants have basic knowledge in atmospheric science according to the courses Atmospheric Physics and Dynamics I.
